What locum work means in Indian hospitals (2026)
A plain-English guide to locum tenens in India: who can do it, how shifts are booked, how pay works, and how ProLocum differs from a traditional staffing agency.
The short definition
Locum work is temporary clinical cover. A locum doctor or nurse takes a defined duty — a night emergency shift, a weekend ICU, a three-day festival block — in a hospital that is short-staffed. It is not a permanent job offer, and it is not unpaid volunteering. The hospital needs a licensed clinician for a known window; the clinician wants control over when and where they practise.
In India the word still travels mostly through WhatsApp groups, alumni lists, and staffing agencies. That informal market is slow, hard to verify, and easy to dispute when payment is late. A locum platform exists to make the same transaction written down: qualification, city, date, a rate shown before apply, and a payment trail.
Who locum work is for
Doctors with hospital experience who want higher per-shift rates, hometown practice while visiting family, or a way to keep clinical hours without a full-time bond. Nurses (GNM/BSc) who want weekend or off-day income, or who return to a hometown for weeks at a time. Hospitals that cannot wait weeks for an agency shortlist when a doctor is on leave or a ward has gone home for Diwali.
It is not a first job. ProLocum requires prior hospital experience so the clinician can start a duty without a teaching orientation that the host hospital did not staff for.
How a shift is booked
The clinician registers once and adds qualification and hospital experience. Until then the name is not in search. Hospitals post duties with city, qualification, date, and pay. Confirmation is designed to happen in minutes, not interview rounds.
After the duty, both sides rate the experience. Ratings are how a platform replaces the 'someone vouch for them on the group' trust model.
Pay, in practical terms
Earn as much as you can. There is no limit on the shifts a nurse or a doctor takes. The hospital sets the rate for that duty and shows it before you apply.
On completed shifts, payment is described as settling the same day to the clinician's bank account. That is the opposite of the common locum complaint: the duty is done, and the accounts team is still processing.
