Why Indian hospitals run short at Diwali, Eid, Holi and Onam
Up to 40% of hospital staff can be away during major Indian festivals while emergencies rise 10–25%. How locum platforms fill gaps in minutes.
A predictable crisis
Indian festival calendars are not a surprise. Diwali, Eid, Holi, Onam, Durga Puja, Pongal, Christmas, and regional fairs send clinicians to hometowns. During major festivals, up to 40% of hospital staff can be unavailable. In the same window, emergency cases can rise 10–25%.
The operational result is cancelled electives, expensive overtime, and remaining staff working unsafe hours. That is a patient-safety problem as much as a roster problem.
Why WhatsApp cannot solve it
The default hospital response is still a group message: 'URGENT — anyone for 2–5 Nov?' Replies are 'travelling' and 'not this week'. There is no credential pack, no rate card, no audit trail, and no way to pre-book a named locum the way you would pre-book a theatre slot.
Agencies can help, but they are built for weeks-long placements and retainers. A four-day Puja cover in Kolkata or a two-night Eid ICU in Hyderabad is a different product.
What actually works
A clinician registers before a profile can be searched. Hospitals post the duty with qualification, city, and dates. Hospitals report 70–80% faster fill than agency channels. Fill Gaps in Minutes.
